Makeup/Applicators

Shelf Life

Tips for Longevity

Concealer

6 months to 1 year

  • Wandapplicator concealers should be thrown away after 6 months because they are likely to grow bacteria.
  • Compact concealers can last up to 12 months especially if you are using a makeup brush to apply your makeup.

Powder (face)

2 years

  • Using a clean makeup brush to apply your powder foundation, bronzer, etc. This can keep away bacteria.

Cream & Gel Cleansers

1 year

  • These products can contain glycolic acid and retinol, which can become more potent over long storing time. This in turn can cause an allergic reaction.

Eye Liner

3 months to 2 years

  • Liquid or gel eyeliners should only be used up to 3 months; this product can be prone to bacteria.
  • Pencil eyeliners can be used up to 2 years. Make sure they are properly sharpened at all times.

Eye Shadow

6 months to 2 years

  • Cream shadow can be used up to 6 months.
  • Powder shadows can be used up to 2 years.
  • Be careful with your eye shadows; DO NOT put your fingers in your makeup, this can transfer bacteria.
  • If you were to ever get an eye infection, toss that makeup! That may be the very thing that led to your infection.

Brushes

Varies

  • Wash once a week with mild detergent or baby shampoo.

Sponges

1 month

  • Wash weekly and discard monthly.

Foundation

6 months to 1 year

  • Whether oil based or water based, foundation should be thrown monitored and thrown out after 6-12 months. Keep these products in cool dry places. Warm, moist places, like your bathroom can cause bacteria and you can lose the consistency of your foundation.

Natural Beauty Products

Varies

  • Because these products have natural ingredients, they WILL expire quicker. If it stinks, changes colors, changes consistency, throw it out! Most natural beauty product companies label expiration dates on their products. If not, you can always call and find out.

Lip Liner

3 years

  • n/a

Lipstick

Varies

  • Some say 1-2 years, others say 4 years. If it smells bad, throw it out.
  • Toss your lipstick if it becomes dry or waxy.
  • I’ve been told that if your makeup starts to smell like crayon, toss it! Crayon stinks!

Mascara

3 months

  • Don’t pump your mascara wand, it can add air to the tube, dry it out, and let nasty bacteria in.
  • If your mascara starts smelling weird or changes texture, please toss it! You don’t want a stinky eye! (Bad eye infection)

Nail Polish

Up to 1 year

  • n/a

Gels & Hair Creams

6 months

  • Throw out especially if you see it curdling or drying up.

Shampoos & Conditioners

up to 1 year

  • Some products have expiration dates, but if they don't stick with the 1 year rule.
